The real upside is that it is right by my house and the Tawny Owls occasionally stray into my oak tree at night. After a lot of backing and forthing, the vendor accepted our offer and the wood is to become a trust to be protected in perpetuity. Anti-social behaviour has degraded the ambience of the wood in the past.

When I was young, it was the only western hummer to routinely stray east in the winter months. But if you did want to come visit… The Rufous Hummingbird is best known for tenacity and toughness and widespread wandering. It breeds into Alaska. My yard is nicer than Alaska (sorry Claire.)

There's a stray dog problem in San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico. There are about 70,000 stray dogs roaming San Luis Rio Colorado in northern Mexico. The town has become so overrun with dogs, that the government began offering a tax exemption of $17 per stray that was offered for euthanasia. The solution? Sarcasm there of course.

Although they breed on the west coast of Florida, Snowy Plover is a rare stray to this part of the state. A La Sagra’s Flycatcher, a Caribbean stray, continued at Charles Deering Estate. A Snowy Plover, a regional rarity, continued at Crandon Beach, while a Solitary Sandpiper in a lonely puddle at Lucky Hammock was a nice surprise.

Most amusing was when this Pied-billed Grebe would stray too close. Then an American Coot charged in to see if it would taste good. It didn’t. I really couldn’t get over the looks I was getting and I took over three hundred pictures. The Red-necked Grebe did not like that one bit.

They also put up a tent to collect donations, such as pet food, cages, collars and other pet supplies, for stray and abandoned animals kept at the shelters. Fortunately, two species of Mergansers sometimes stray to Cuba, and so my friend suggested, correctly, that ours was a female Hooded Merganser. Having seen them in Europe, I knew it was a Merganser.
