Another near-endemic, shared only with tiny Lesotho and Swaziland is the bizarre Southern Bald Ibis. Like the Southern Bald Ibis, its range just extends into Lesotho and Swaziland and family groups occur in rocky and mountainous areas from the Cape Peninsula northwards into eastern South Africa.
This was tough because this excluded species that occur in two countries within South Africa’s geographical area, Lesotho and Swaziland. I then decided to reduce it further to South African endemics only.
This species is a southern African endemic, restricted to, but fortunately not uncommon, in dry woodland and sand forest habitats of northern Zululand, Swaziland, scattered pockets of north-eastern South Africa and southern Mozambique. Definitely my personal favorite of Africa’s pink birds is the delicate Pink-throated Twinspot.
Umoya was one of seven elephants brought to the Safari Park -- then known as the Wild Animal Park -- in 2003 from the African nation of Swaziland. "Umoya should never have been removed from her home to begin with," said PETA spokesman David Perle. The Safari Park has 18 elephants, including Umoya's two offspring.
And so, back to political entities, this field guide covers Namibia , Botswana , Zimbabwe , the southern half of Mozambique (south of the Zambezi River), South Africa , Lesotho and Eswatini ( Swaziland ).
We had been driving through Eswatini (Swaziland) for a few hours during the day, coming from Ndumo. I usually do not write much about traveling to and from birding places but my friend and I arrived in Malelane in the afternoon. Eswatini must have the worst paved roads I have ever experienced.
