Its pale, dark-tipped bill and light eyes contrast against the dark bill and red eyes of the Lesser Flamingo. There is no doubting that an airborne flock of pink, leggy birds is worth a good tip and it gave me cause to wonder if my captain was just slightly slow in throttling back as we approached another flock and they took flight also.

The most unusual thing about Flowerpiercers, a small neotropical genus, is that specialized bill. The lower mandible slants upward. Apparently this is the perfect design for floral backstabbing.

You can tell this one is an Ash-throated Flycatcher by the gray sides and tip of its otherwise rufous tail. Lot’s of Thrashers have curved bills, some much longer than this one’s. There are several, almost identical, species of Flycatchers in the Myiarchus genus.

One of the birds is a juvenile from last year’s breeding and still has a dull bill tip and pale legs. Shorebirds roosting and bathing in Roebuck Bay. You may well have noticed the Pied Oystercatchers in the above photos. Soon the Pied Oystercatchers will mostly have the beach to themselves.
