We managed to get everybody out and onto the transportation only about 45 minutes behind schedule, and as the sun rose over the regions famed White Desert, we were on our way southward. In short, it had to be something really good to get this wagon train to stop. I’m not sure who first put out the alarm.

On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. On two of our trips to Sydney we have made a visit to the Australian Botanic Gardens at Mount Annan.

Some of these islands cannot be reached by any mode of transport except a long ocean crossing and some are well over a thousand miles from the closest human habitation. The Royal Botanical Gardens are a huge area to explore and easily accessed by public transport. This worked in our favour and we were able to take a few more photos before we had to make a move and get ourselves back to the train station. We have to be content with Barking Owls around Broome, which are also magnificent owls!

Arriving in Singapore we soon collected our bags and got ourselves a NETS card for travel on public transport and to also use in supermarkets. The train system is fast and efficient and was our primary mode of transport. If the train did not go all of the way then we took a connecting bus or walked.

On our trip to New South Wales in June we took the opportunity to return to one of the picturesque bush walks that is not too far from the city and easily reached by public transport. The train station at Hornsby is the start of the walk and there are shops nearby if you need supplies before you head off or on your return.

Now up and running for over two years the Walkway Over The Hudson , which was once a bridge for trains to make their way over the Hudson River, is a pretty darn cool place to take a stroll. The first train crossed December 29, 1888. mile long walkway. After several false starts, successful construction began in 1886.

When you see a falconer transporting their bird or walking with a group, the bird might be in a dark crate or hooded. All the training with the bird is based on positive reinforcement. When Merlins first started nesting in the Twin Cities metro area, one of the birds had a band. Falconers keep their birds in the dark. Not all the time.

Our first delay was one of the many iron ore trains that transport the ore to the coast from inland. These trains are over 2kms (1 mile) long and over 200 carriages, so we had quite a long wait at the track! Waiting for a long train!

Having established that there are regular trains from the city of Melbourne to the Dandenong Ranges National Park with a weekend all day train ticket capped at $6 per person it made sense to head that way once again. Once again this was a good birding trip on public transport to see some bush and the birds on offer around Melbourne.

Their range is generally within 240 kilometres/150 miles of Sydney and you can access the areas quite easily by public transport. Heading on the train from Katoomba to Blackheath, where we had observed Rock Warblers in the past, our search began on the miserable drizzly day. Some of the trail back to the Govett’s Leap Lookout.

TRANSPORTATION. One along the train tracks near Summit Ponds. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. You do not have to walk all the way around, as there are various access points and you can get there by bus or train if you don’t want to walk from the city centre.
