Damage to New York included floods caused by the storm surge, power cuts and disruption to transport, including the loss of the railway line that crosses Jamaica Bay. Two years on, the train line has been repaired at last and I paid a visit to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

When I got word of the state first Couch’s Kingbird being seen in the West Village, easily accessible by train, I was up at the Olde Homestead. My official list will include only birds I see on foot and/or using New York City public transportation: mainly buses and trains under the auspices of the MTA, but also the Staten Island Ferry.

Berowra and Mt Kuring-gai trails

On our recent trip to Sydney we explored several areas that were easily reached by public transport & we discovered that there are some great walk trails that start near train stations. There are two good day walks that start at either Berowra or Mt Kuring-gai train stations and they can be done in either direction.

Our bus ride to the train that would take us to the boat launch led through monoculture pineapple plantations being sprayed with pesticides that were not a pretty sight, but the view of the sun breaking through the clouds over the mountains (like in the picture above) was inspiring. Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to!

Birding the road from Kabul to Jalalabad

Alternative transportation options would have included traveling on a truck like this one. We will establish a series of online workshops, trainings, and seminars for young women. As I said, the road mostly goes downhill … … but not every car or truck has good enough brakes to stay on the road during this journey.

We managed to get everybody out and onto the transportation only about 45 minutes behind schedule, and as the sun rose over the regions famed White Desert, we were on our way southward. In short, it had to be something really good to get this wagon train to stop. I’m not sure who first put out the alarm.

Birding the Walkway Over The Hudson

Now up and running for over two years the Walkway Over The Hudson , which was once a bridge for trains to make their way over the Hudson River, is a pretty darn cool place to take a stroll. The first train crossed December 29, 1888. mile long walkway. After several false starts, successful construction began in 1886.
