On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. On two of our trips to Sydney we have made a visit to the Australian Botanic Gardens at Mount Annan.

Arriving in Singapore we soon collected our bags and got ourselves a NETS card for travel on public transport and to also use in supermarkets. The train system is fast and efficient and was our primary mode of transport. If the train did not go all of the way then we took a connecting bus or walked.

The Royal Botanical Gardens are a huge area to explore and easily accessed by public transport. This worked in our favour and we were able to take a few more photos before we had to make a move and get ourselves back to the train station. We have to be content with Barking Owls around Broome, which are also magnificent owls!

Safa Park can be visited in the confidence that you will easily be able to get a train or taxi back to the airport. A guide with transport would be the perfect way to visit this site as it can be a bit tricky to get to. I recently hired a car from Dubai airport through a brokerage site for less than £20.

On our trip to New South Wales in June we took the opportunity to return to one of the picturesque bush walks that is not too far from the city and easily reached by public transport. The train station at Hornsby is the start of the walk and there are shops nearby if you need supplies before you head off or on your return.

It is very easy to reach Olympic Park by public transport and the fastest way is to take a train from Central Station to Lidcombe and then you take a train to Olympic Park. We came to the conclusion that the small loop line that takes you to Olympic Park from Lidcombe is where “old trains go to die”!!

We searched for walks that started and ended near public transport, as we were going to get a ticket- MyMulti 3 -that would let us travel wide and far unrestricted each week. On our recent trip to New South Wales we followed up our walk from Otford train station to Helensburgh train station , through the Royal National Park, with another long walk the next day. Once again we referred to the Wildwalks website for another option that included using public transport, with a train being our preference.

Our first delay was one of the many iron ore trains that transport the ore to the coast from inland. These trains are over 2kms (1 mile) long and over 200 carriages, so we had quite a long wait at the track! Waiting for a long train!

The last bird that I observed along the coast was a White-faced Heron feeding and then it was time to head inland to catch a train back to the city. Another option is to take a train to Sandringham and then walk south and spend a lot more time at Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary. White-faced Heron.

Having established that there are regular trains from the city of Melbourne to the Dandenong Ranges National Park with a weekend all day train ticket capped at $6 per person it made sense to head that way once again. Once again this was a good birding trip on public transport to see some bush and the birds on offer around Melbourne.

Their range is generally within 240 kilometres/150 miles of Sydney and you can access the areas quite easily by public transport. Heading on the train from Katoomba to Blackheath, where we had observed Rock Warblers in the past, our search began on the miserable drizzly day. Some of the trail back to the Govett’s Leap Lookout.

Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. You do not have to walk all the way around, as there are various access points and you can get there by bus or train if you don’t want to walk from the city centre.

When Merlins first started nesting in the Twin Cities metro area, one of the birds had a band. Falconers keep their birds in the dark. Not all the time.
