Twenty years ago, flocks consisting of a thousand European Turtle Doves were a common sight in Serbia in spring. Turtle Doves have been declining in Europe since the 1970s, and in this century alone, the continent has lost 40% of its population of the species. Ten years ago, those flocks were reduced to a few hundred birds.

SeaWorld aquarist Jenny Albert covers up a “cold stunned” endangered green turtle to keep the animal warm at SeaWorld’s Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. This influx of turtles gives the park’s Sea Turtle Rescue Program more than 1,000 turtles rescued since its inception in 1980. The SeaWorld team does great work!

Normally there is four-wheel drive access along a section of Cable Beach, but the Shire in recent years acknowledged that the flatback turtles needed help to survive. Originally the beach access was closed for a few hours each side of the biggest tides and then four-wheel drives would hopefully not drive or park on nest sites.

The boardwalk itself brought amazing, up-close viewing of fish and turtles, plus overhanging sweet gum, live oak, and bald cypress trees. He excitedly ran across the wooden boardwalk as I heard Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wrens , and a Barred Owl hooting.

A Flatback Turtle was just returning to the sea after spending most of the night nesting above the high tide mark. This is the first record of a Flatback Turtle nesting on Cable Beach this season and the nest will hatch out in due course without the large female Flatback Turtle returning to shore. But the turtle action was pretty intense. Sorry about this perch; these Mud Turtles are taking the sun on a discarded Mexican-made General Popo-brand tire. The water level in tiny pond #2 is now quite low, and the only shorebirds there were a Great Egret and a Snowy Egret.

Allen’s turtle transect was 2.5 No, we didn’t find any new turtle tracks, but we did record 18 bird species.

At first, the birds were absent, it was just that one shearwater, a sad lost Eastern Kingbird flying low over the waves, and groups of Brown Boobies making a beeline to feeding grounds. Walking north I soon encountered a fresh Flatback Turtle nest from the previous night’s high tide and that should hatch out in about 2 months all going well. The nests have been monitored for some years now so there is now some baseline data on how often the Flatback Turtles nest on Cable Beach and how successful they are.

200 metres / 650 feet lower, amid fields, hedges and rivers, I was surrounded by Eurasian Golden Orioles , Common Nightingales , even a few threatened European Turtle Doves. Bird therapy? I was getting up early and making quite a mileage on dirt tracks, spending entire days outdoors, getting tired in a good way.

A family of Eurasian Sparrowhawks showed well on several occasions, than there was one Black Kite , and up to five White-tailed Eagles at once. By the end of the month, Spotted Flycatchers become quite frequent (several), together with Lesser Whitethroats (a few dozen).
