It’s actually found in a wadi in the United Arab Emirates, in the mountains between Dubai and the Gulf of Oman. Long may it last. The spring the birds I’ll show you today is far from the seat of New Zealand’s government where I now work.

The travel agent mentioned I had a 2 hour layover in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. I was flying Emirates and that was the hub. Following on from my recent description of a brief visit to Kuala Lumpur , my return trip from Britain gave me 26hours in Dubai. It was actually a moment’s impulse.

United Arab Emirates: No Bird Award. But it’s a species I’ve tried for years to see in Britain and failed to, so of course I saw one finally at the extreme edge of it’s range in Ethiopia. I never left the airport on my 13 hour layover and never saw a bird.

Compare this to the next bird… Subspecies kalbansis, United Arab Emirates. The supercilium (eyebrow) stops just above the eye (which the technical would describe as a supraloral stripe I guess), and the loral stripe through the eye is blue.
