Authorities are concerned that a man spotted wearing a goat outfit and cavorting with actual wild Mountain Goats in the mountains of Utah could be in danger when hunting season opens in September. And, no, I am not making this up.

Investigative journalism by the Salt Lake Tribune, following-up on allegations levelled by PETA against the University of Utah's Comparative Medicine Center and the Cardiovascular Research & Training Institute laboratories revealed the two laboratories had used 190 dogs and cats in 2009, all obtained from shelters.

The seventh occurrence of Harlequin Ducks in Utah is now over. Because a hunter or hunters shot all three. They were apparently shot from the Antelope Island Causeway, where birders had been reporting them from, and, even worse, it seems that the hunters might have learned of their presence from birding listservs.

A man in Utah has pled guilty to "interfering with an animal enterprise" in federal court. The raid to which Viehl pleaded guilty took place at the McMullin mink farm in South Jordan in August 2008. Rydalch said the raid consisted of releasing minks and spray-painting parts of the farm, including a barn.

More than 4,000 migrating Eared Grebes came to ground in Utah with calamitous consequences , apparently mistaking large parking lots for bodies of water. Thousands of these unwise waterfowl perished, but thousands more have survived and are being tended to by government workers and volunteers. Oh, the humanity!

The Collective added six new states in the past three years, but none have eclipsed the century mark: Wisconsin ( 74 ), Utah (55), Hawaii (38), Oklahoma (18), Rhode Island (9), and Connecticut (5). A few states still have no checklists at all: Nebraska , Minnesota , Iowa , Kentucky , West Virginia , Mississippi , and Alabama.

I saw this at Bear River Migratory Refuge in Utah. I didn’t think they were as agile as a wood duck, but apparently they can. This is one of my favorite nesting ideas I’ve come across in my travels. It’s an overhang for Cliff Swallows to use to build their mud nests.

FWS began releasing captive-bred condors from the program into the wild in the early 1990s, with considerable success: once down to 22 birds, there are now approximately 275 wild condors in California, Arizona, Utah, and Baja California, as well as 165 in captivity.

The birds living on the Baja are fulltime, breeding residents, while many of the birds will range as far north as central California, and Utah. It would appear that this is the only bird with this capability. They frequent the dry, hot desert areas, which includes Arizona, Nevada and central mainland Mexico.

I got a handful of serious requests for curriculum from several teachers who went on to start their own classes. However, it wasn’t long before the interest tapered off.
