I shot some video footage of what appears to be pair bonding behavior between them. I always love watching this National Geographic video of the ducklings first day, when they sometimes have to jump out of nest sites that are 70 feet or higher in a tree cavity. This male appeared to be the mate of the female watching from the log.

I shot this video of a pair diving at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge as the American Coots opportunistically fed off the material the ducks brought to the surface. During summer and winter, Ring-necked Ducks prefer shallow, freshwater wetlands with stable water levels and abundant emergent and submerged or floating plants.
