A company that bred Beagles for research will pay more than $35 million after pleading guilty last month to violating the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) by neglecting thousands of dogs at its Cumberland, Virginia, breeding facility. The payment includes the largest ever fine in an animal welfare case.

PETA is based out of Virginia, and they have to report the number of animals they receive each year to the Virgina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Their report is public information and is free to view every year. PETA 2023 Animal Data In 2023, they reported receiving 3,294 animals in their custody (excluding wildlife).

During migration, they occur in more places, I bet that golden-hooded bird with a rainforest mixed flock was on its way to Virginia or Alabama or wooded swamp in some other part of its ancient range that used to bear witness to the double knocks of Ivory-billeds. The cherry on my personal birding cake, along with those Flamingos, was a Virginia Rail , which was a new Michoacán species for me. Like the Black-polled Yellowthroats , these two species have been reduced to such a small part of the lake that you can almost reach out and touch them.

There seem to be only one each of the Virginia’s and Black-throated Gray Warbler , which would seem sad if I didn’t love solitude so much myself. I have managed to see 4 Warbling Vireos at the same time, 3 Nashville Warblers , 3 Yellow-rumped Warblers , and 2 Wilson’s and Orange-crowned Warblers.

While it was neither the rarest or most interesting bird I saw this weekend, the Eastern Bluebird that flew over my car as I drove through Virginia has to take Best Bird of the Weekend honors just because it will be my third blue bird in a row.
