For example, my list of the Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for birding includes an excellent location in Minnesota ( Minnesota Valley NWR ). (Inexplicably, eBird does not consider Puerto Rico part of the United States, but if it were properly included , it would do well, with 107 species.).

Only several dozen of these swans wintered in the region (the region being, approximately, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming) and for some reason they were almost all at this river in this year, and on this day, they were right there in view. My sister told me they were Trumpeter Swans ( Cygnus buccinator ). All of them. Or almost so.

The Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Florida was a nice break from winter though the blizzard back home forced me to drive back to New York adding birds seen on the road and at rest stops along the way. Garganey , 11 June, Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, New York. What gives?
