Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. A pair of screeching Blacksmith Lapwings was flying around as six Burchell’s Zebras were quenching their thirst, suspiciously observing surroundings every now and then. What are your best wildlife moments?
Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!
What this land-locked country lacks in endemic birds it more than makes up for in accessibility of tough species, numbers of birds and the overall wildlife experience. We are currently filming in Botswana. have basically focused our filming efforts on three regions of northern Botswana: The Okavango Delta, The Chobe and the Makgadigadi Pans.
A pair of screeching Blacksmith Lapwings was flying around as six Burchell’s Zebras were quenching their thirst, suspiciously observing surroundings every now and then. The Sun was half-set behind the horizon, painting the grass golden-yellow and shining through the dust disturbed by the hoofs of now visibly nervous zebras.
But my long wait to see antelope, zebras and everything in between is finally over. This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I’ll also take the opportunity to travel a bit. It makes economic sense too.
Ruaha National Park in Tanzania used to be a true paradise for wildlife gathered around the rich Ruaha riverbanks. Video “The Chase and Chomp” – A lion pride tracks a zebra herd for hours, until it’s ready to pounce — no zebra can escape an ambush like this. Tonight, Lions on the Edge!
The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing. So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. This will act as our base for the next 20 days.

Though it is certainly bad news that the U.S.
Urban environments are expanding rapidly, and with urbanization come both challenges and opportunities for wildlife. In this study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of juvenile zebra finches was allowed to interact with an adult.
Thankfully the days of visiting Africa purely for slaughtering its wildlife have mostly come to a merciful end, and safari operators have adopted the Big Five term to market tours that offer sightings of the fortunate remanants of Africa’s once teeming great herds.
Great wildlife preserves, reserves and parks exist for a number of reasons. It was here I managed to finally find my Brown Hyaena, making that family the first family of mammals of which I have seen every species (Spotted, Brown, Striped Hyaenas and Aardwolf)).
Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. Her husband was David Sheldrick, the renowned naturalist and founding warden of Tsavo East National Park who died of a heart attack in 1977.
A portion of the proceeds of ticket sales will be donated to AWF through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor. Join the “African Cats” grassroots community and donate to the African Wildlife Foundation on Causes: [link]. This happens during the week of April 18.
By the time you see this in the United States, I will have had a full week to explore this amazing area, and the wildlife that calls this home. We are on the go until usually around 1:30 give or take a herd of zebras blocking the road. The schedule is a bit daunting, as we are up before 5 AM to get to the gate for the 6AM opening.
While photographing the Brown Bears in the Russian Far East, a friend of mine, Jovan “Lucky” Lakatos, was with Michio Hoshino, Japanese-born nature photographer specialized in Alaskan wildlife and experienced in how to behave facing this apex predator. Zebra finch, Taeniopygia (Poephila) guttata. Shoveler, Northern, Anas clypeata.
One of my favorites is Zebra Longwing. The field trip to Pine Island, site of the first permanent white settlement in Brevard County had a historical slant and the hot afternoon sun, even in January, made for slow birding. The Heleconius genus is undeniably tropical, and this is about as far north as this species is seen with any regularity.
This actually benefits our local wildlife, because the rainwater then gets trapped in the borrow pit and in some instances it will sustain the wildlife right through our dry months when there is no rainfall at all. Little Corella and Red-tailed Black Cockatoos. Red-tailed Black Cockatoos.
As do a diverse suite of other wildlife from lions and zebras to ground squirrels and meerkats. This part of Botswana – the magnificent Makgadikgadi Pans – is a truly unforgettable birding location. Coursers, larks, korhaans and other dry country specialists abound here.
The river levels are currently low and offer water to the surrounding birds and wildlife. It is on the banks of the Fitzroy River, which floods during the wet season months each year. Fitzroy Crossing was first explored by Captain Stokes in 1838 and it was named after Captain Robert Fitzroy, who had been the commander on the HMS Beagle.
A Parks and Wildlife officer in Kalgoorlie told us that he called them the “dreadlock plant”, because that is just what they looked like! Among these bizarre plants we observed Orange Chats , Crimson Chats , Zebra Finch and Crested Pigeons. They are obviously a salt bush that loves the area. “Dreadlock plant”!
Now it is perfect weather for camping in the bush and enjoying the wildlife and for this reason we took two days to explore the bush between Broome and Derby. The native bushes were full of Zebra Finch, Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch waiting to nip to the water when they felt safe to do so.
We pulled up on our last trip last month on May 23rd for lunch and there were only pools of water, but that was enough to sustain a good mixture of birds and other wildlife. Zebra Finch , Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes , Willie Wagtails and Torresian Crows were amongst the trees that lined the remaining pools of water.
