On a winter’s day, a Pileated Woodpecker chops away at a fallen log. Its audience consists of a Hairy Woodpecker and a Downy Woodpecker. Once it leaves, the Hairy moves to the broken log and chops some more. After it leaves, the Downy has its chance to find something edible in the leavings.

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.

The characteristic calls of the Ladder-backed Woodpecker can be heard anywhere that there aren’t too many people. I’ve heard that vultures are a bit of a rarity in some places up north. Most days you will get a good look at the Arizona Woodpecker. The resident Wild Turkey population is always ready for an easy meal at the feeders. This is a great place to see a good number of Mexican Jays. I was quiet surprised to see this male Western Tanager show up right at dark for a quick drink of water.

In the UK we have a mere three resident woodpeckers, but in the vicinity of Kerkini it’s not difficult to find all of Europe’s peckers except the Three-toed. Middle-spotted can be found in most of the woods and forests, Syrian are frequent in the villages, while Lesser-spotted (now a rare bird in the UK) are pleasingly common.
