It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.
On the smaller island of Tobago there are three species of woodpeckers and three species of woodcreepers – one of each is found on Tobago but not Trinidad. Woodpeckers are charismatic birds, and when a Golden-olive Woodpecker makes an appearance within the darkness of the rainforest they always elicit gasps of wonder and awe.
One of the first birds I remember seeing was a Green Woodpecker. According to the latter, these woodpeckers are “especially fond of ants, and will leave the trees in search of ants’ nests”… Source It had landed on our neighbours’ lawn, and I was invited round to see it.
Woodpeckers are a fascinating family. There are 22 species of woodpeckers in the US and Canada. Red-headed Woodpecker 2. Red-headed Woodpecker 2. They bang away at trees with their beaks, without knocking themselves silly. I have seen 21 of them. Here, I share my favourites.
Hongbenghe, a small village right at the border of China’s Yunnan province and Myanmar, has a number of woodpeckers. And most birders (though not all – see here for an exception) quite like woodpeckers, making it a good topic for a dedicated post.

She was the one who figured out that the knocking noise came from a woodpecker trying to build a home in our facade. It was probably a great spotted woodpecker, which is very common in Germany. He eventually fixed the little hole, and the woodpeckers didn’t return for about another week. The post Knock, Knock! Who´s There?-
On a winter’s day, a Pileated Woodpecker chops away at a fallen log. Its audience consists of a Hairy Woodpecker and a Downy Woodpecker. Once it leaves, the Hairy moves to the broken log and chops some more. After it leaves, the Downy has its chance to find something edible in the leavings.
It is home to almost a hundred bird species, including woodpeckers and songbirds. The park is home to the Middle Spotted , Lesser Spotted , Grey-headed , Eurasian Green and Black Woodpeckers. Zvezdara Forest is located in the eastern part of Belgrade. To get there, take the bus line 65 to the “Zvezdara Forest” stop.
While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.
Woodpeckers and finches The top of the city would be the highest peak of the Avala Mountain Reserve (511 m / 1700 ft above sea level), with the Memorial to the Unknown Hero and overgrown with firs and pines. In Belgrade, Serbia, winter months offer surprisingly good birding possibilities. Photo Snezana Panjkovic.
White-bearded Manakins , Golden-olive Woodpeckers and Green Honeycreepers all came in pairs to feed on the fruit, the woodpeckers also prodding the soft, moss-laden bark for any other available morsels. A male Golden-olive Woodpecker was never far from his partner. Guianan Trogon. Green Honeycreeper. White-bearded Manakin.
Tanagers, flycatchers, woodcreepers, woodpeckers, cuckoos – the seeker is guaranteed to be rewarded. A Lineated Woodpecker and the much larger Crimson-crested Woodpecker making a landing behind it. Note the white “V” that is diagnostic of the largest woodpecker in the Caribbean. Collared Trogon.
The usual, friendly types are chickadees, nuthatches, and some woodpeckers. A female Pileated Woodpecker We saw a few more birds along the boardwalk. A Pileated Woodpecker slipped through the trees. A Palm Warbler , in breeding plumage, hopped onto the end of our table. A crumb of bread had fallen on the table.
Old beech forests are inhabited by Grey-headed Woodpecker , Eurasian Green Woodpecker , Black Woodpecker , White-backed Woodpecker (rare), Stock Dove (uncommon), Collared Flycatcher , Red-breasted Flycatcher (rare), Marsh Tit and Coal Tit. Above them, on limestone cliffs, Alpine Swift and Crag Martin breed.

I wonder if they think of themselves as European or as African birds. Eurasian Oystercatcher (Tiaozini, China, Sep 2019).
Arctic Loon), Lesser Black-backed Gull , Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Goldcrest should easily make 190, although the pecker is a bit uncertain. And immediately, I hear a woodpecker looking for food. A pecker I could not see, only occasionally hear… I almost wrote “woodpecker sp. Yes, I know, I’ll reach 190, but 200?
Volunteer Moya Kinnealy reached in nearly to her elbow and removed four tiny Red-bellied Woodpeckers. The birds were living like city apartment dwellers … the upstairs neighbors were the woodpeckers, downstairs were the screech owls. Director Rick Schubert carefully drilled around the small opening and removed a larger piece.
We had seen an interesting selection of birds, including Streaked Laughing Thrushes, Grey-winged Blackbirds, Rufous-cheeked Scimitar Babblers and a Scaly-bellied Woodpecker, but nothing unexpected. Then, suddenly, our guide, Gajendra, got excited. He enthusiastically pointed out a pair of… Source

No question about it being a woodpecker – a most beautiful one at that! This Red-necked Woodpecker gave us a good look before gliding to a slightly further tree. No longer than a minute after we parted ways with the Red-headed Woodpecker , we heard another light tapping overhead.
Hoffmann’s Woodpeckers are a common, everyday sight, similar to the Golden-fronted Woodpecker , they use the same snags as a larger species, the Lineated Woodpecker. Barred Antshrike calls and sometimes pops into view as Red-billed Pigeons power overhead.
A Hairy Woodpecker ? I soon added Common Mergansers , Hooded Mergansers , Mallards, Hairy and Downy and Pileated and Red-bellied Woodpeckers , both White and Red-breasted Nuthatches , and American Crows. A Red-breasted Nuthatch perhaps? Even a Black-capped Chickadee. Birding from a Maine beach. But still!
I spent some time sitting on the lawn and watching an Eurasian Green Woodpecker forage around me. Eurasian Green Woodpecker In other areas, the lawn was densely covered in daisies and I experimented a bit with photographing from low angles to make the daisies look even more dense.
While making sure my kid didn’t launch himself off a high structure, I noted Eastern Bluebirds, Northern Cardinals, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers , and potentially a Brown-headed Nuthatch , though the latter only called once so I’m not 100% sure.
The machine-gun drumming of a Chestnut Woodpecker greeted us once we alighted from the vehicle. No visual on the woodpecker, sadly – several Scaled Pigeons bolted from the treetops as we searched, though. The eerie entrance to Asa Wright, a feeble whimper of what once was.
One moment I am seeing pine-dependent Grace’s Warblers and oak-dependent Acorn Woodpeckers, and the next I see the Hot Country endemic Golden-cheeked Woodpecker. Ladder-backed Woodpeckers move freely between the two habitat zones.
Golden-fronted Woodpeckers are exceedingly common here, both in the city and in the countryside. The characteristic calls of the Ladder-backed Woodpecker can be heard anywhere that there aren’t too many people. I’ve heard that vultures are a bit of a rarity in some places up north. Can somebody please confirm this for me?

The Crimson-crested Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in the Caribbean. New locations are going to yield new birds, such as this Sooty Grassquit. Dreaming of eye-level trogons? We got you. This Green-backed Trogon looks at me as I try to convince it to look the other way. Can you see her in this photo?
There were waterbirds and raptors, owls and woodpeckers, thrushes, grosbeaks and crossbills, and of course those charming and indispensable new world warblers. Until recently, it was considered to be the same species as the Eurasian three-toed Woodpecker (P. tridactylus). As a boy he was struck by polio which scarred him for life.

Right in front of us, one more bird lands on a wire: a woodpecker! I’ve seen woodpeckers drumming on electricity pylons before, but don’t think I’ve ever seen one on the wire. This one fans it tails, showing well: a Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Red-headed Woodpeckers chattered to each other as they flew from tree to tree, and I marveled at just how many I spotted. Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Eastern Bluebirds rounded out the species near the pond, but in the distance I noted a Red-tailed Hawk , as well as the regular calls of a Northern Bobwhite.
Those extra pages (32 more than #2) allowed for more space and completely or partly new plates of grouse, divers (loons), several groups of raptors, terns, owls (birds shown from several angles now, new vignettes, too), swifts (additional three rarities added into main plates), woodpeckers (have you ever seen an overweight woodpecker?),
Most days you will get a good look at the Arizona Woodpecker. The resident Wild Turkey population is always ready for an easy meal at the feeders. This is a great place to see a good number of Mexican Jays. I was quiet surprised to see this male Western Tanager show up right at dark for a quick drink of water.
Grey-headed Woodpecker by Krishna Prajapati / Wikimedia Commons. Or a reservoir I visited today, with both Grey-headed and Green Woodpeckers , but the highlight were three young Little Owls exploring their yard, from the chimney and the roof to the fence posts and the lawn.
Middle and Great Spotted Woodpeckers as well as the Eurasian Green Woodpecker were heard. And it offers an unusual set of birds for a forest: more Northern Lapwings, together with a Grey Heron , a dozen Little Egrets and even two Eurasian Spoonbills. A bit later, a Eurasian Golden Oriole started to play its flute.
In the UK we have a mere three resident woodpeckers, but in the vicinity of Kerkini it’s not difficult to find all of Europe’s peckers except the Three-toed. Middle-spotted can be found in most of the woods and forests, Syrian are frequent in the villages, while Lesser-spotted (now a rare bird in the UK) are pleasingly common.
