A good year for Zebra Finch

This year has been different as we have a new visitor-the Zebra Finch. The last time we saw Zebra Finch visit our garden was a pair in 2004 and then suddenly in April this year they appeared in large numbers all around Broome’s coastline and at the Poo Ponds. I went out to sit on the lawn and take some photographs.

A solitary Chestnut-breasted Mannikin

The main bird species visiting were Rufous-throated Honeyeaters , Zebra Finch , Long-tailed Finch and Double-barred Finch. We have to move the branches on each visit as the water level drops back and we place it a bit further out each time. Finches tend to move in large flocks as they follow the food and water.

Black-and-white Warblers are usually dapper little birds, with their head-to-tail zebra stripes. It looks frustratingly similar to the Rufous-crowned Sparrow of the western United States and Mexico, but is much larger and has a heavier bill. But this one had just bathed, and had not yet combed its hair.
