OCTOBER 18, 2012
The 2012 event was held at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. What is up with the birding community in the northern part of the US recently? Have we all gone completely mental?

The Peru Birding Rally Challenge is a joint initiative between PromPeru and the Inkaterra Family of hotels. In early December of 2012 we had the opportunity to cover this hard-core rally in the south of Peru. Enter the inaugural Peru Birding Rally Challenge , the first international birding event of it’s kind in the world.

JANUARY 7, 2013
I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list. I came up just short of reaching 1,100 Birds on my overall World Life List , clocking in at 1,096, not a bad increase of 48 from the beginning of 2012 when I started at 1,048. January 2012 started off with a bang.

JANUARY 16, 2013
Back in January of last year I said in my list for the year that I’d be happy if I hit 300 birds in 2012. I have a deep love for members of the babbler family (or families now) and so the ten minutes I spent with a pair of Chestnut-crowned Babblers was heaven. My final number for last year was 402 as it turns out.

As is my wont, we’ll be celebrating a secular Easter replete with colored eggs, chocolate bunnies, and a fun family hike. Perhaps I’ll even see my First Phoebe of 2012. Share your plans in the comments below! Corey will be visiting his folks in upstate New York.

APRIL 8, 2012
The month and this particular period is all the more auspicious for me and mine, as so many friends and families celebrate spring birthdays. My family took our annual post-Easter Egg hunt hike at Powder Mills Park, where I spied several gorgeous matched pairs of Wood Ducks along with lots of different woodpecker species.

On October 29 th 2012, “superstorm” Sandy devastated the east coast of the USA, affecting states from Florida to Maine, with severe damage in New Jersey and New York. We know that Corey and his family came through the ordeal safely, but what of the warblers?

DECEMBER 25, 2012
Tropical Kingbird is likely to be one of the last birds I see in 2012 and first I see in 2013. December 25th is possibly the worst day of the year to be posting a blog, because lets face it, even the dispensing of wisdom from the world’s leading birder (past, present, and future) can compete with family duties.

This year’s National Family Pack Walk will prove, once again, that it’s not your average walk in the park. All proceeds from the National Family Pack Walk events will be donated to the Cesar Millan Foundation, which raises awareness and supports the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of abused and abandoned dogs.

On Saturday, he only found one out there but with his folks visiting he made another trip out with the whole family and spotted both owls, one of them a gorgeous adult male. Regardless, seeing Snowy Owls with the family and getting a new bird for the Queens list was great!

JULY 19, 2012
Speaking of July, every year around this time an assemblage of my family and friends gather in a remote part of Pennsylvania for food, fun, and flaming chickens. Corey will be spending the weekend with family in NYC and doubts he’ll get much birding in. Is this too heady for a lazy July?

Some families will travel, while others might prefer to hunker down and hibernate. My family is driving up from NYC for a long Rochester weekend. Schools across the United States are closing for Mid-Winter Break, which means the nation will be abuzz with energetic kids fighting boredom. How about you?

JULY 29, 2012
My family and I have taken our show to the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. The month of July is drawing to a close, so prepare yourself for the inevitable chorus expressing surprise, chagrin, and dismay at the imminent end of summer. Do folks on the southern side of the globe, I wonder, do the same thing around the end of January?

Thus, I was surprised and a little saddened to learn from my Kentucky family that kids in the Bluegrass State go back to school next week. The summer span of school-free days from late June to early September always seemed to me to be an experience all United States students held in common. No kid should be stuck in school in early August!

North of the equator, schools will be letting out for the summer and families will be packing up for adventure. Obviously, that means a lot of things in a lot of contexts, but here, of course, I’m talking about birding. Exotic locales make for exotic birding and even the most mundane territory can astound the first time visitor.

I’m taking my kids down to NYC to get in touch with their Bronx roots and family. The Fireside Poet James Russell Lowell had some thoughts on the matter , but I recommend that you get out there and decide for yourself. You’ve only got a few more days in the month, so make the most of this weekend!

My family and many others are looking forward to veritable feasts to honor the fall harvest, for which I am also thankful. Most Americans are enjoying an early Thanksgiving weekend, for which I’m thankful. I also give thanks today for 10,000 Birds, our awesome writers, and our awesome readers… love you guys!

One of our watering points in the garden had a family of Black-chinned Honeyeaters at it. They generally acknowledge their arrival with a distinctive shrill sound, but they were silent on this occasion and it was the first “family” visit. They are distant photographs and it shows how well they can hide in the foliage.

Since 2012, I was fortunate to spend a considerable amount of time birding through southern Borneo almost each year, and this new book meant that I now have four field guides for Borneo at my service. The figures show the order of bird families in the four field guides mentioned above. Order of bird families, non-songbirds.

It was July of 2012. I had taken the short drive to the park to search for a family of American Dippers sighted near the visitor center by a fellow birder a few days before. In October of 2012, the Institute for Bird Populations released “ A Conservation Strategy for the Black-Backed Woodpecker in California 3.”

The last time I had seen a Summer Tanager was during a Christmas Bird Count in 2012. The only harassment came from the resident Red-tailed Squirrel family – which seemed to be more curiosity than anything else, as their nest was just about two feet away. Typical of the species.

There are five families: Stilts & Avocets (Family Recurvirostridae), Oystercatchers (Family Haem), Plovers (Family Charadriidae), Sandpipers and Allies (Family Scolopacidae), and Jacanas (Jacanidae), with Family Scolopacidae representing the bulk of species (as it does worldwide).

Just two weekends into 2012, I already love this year. Sure, I’m likely omitting some other far more important factors involving family, friends, and professional success, but the little things mean a lot. Plus my New York Football Giants just advanced in the first round of the NFL playoffs. Don’t you agree?

I begin 2012 with 284 birds on my Queens Life List , 478 birds on my ABA Life List , and 1,048 birds on my World Life List. When you go on a boat ride specifically with the hope of seeing a species, and you drag your family onto said boat, you had better see the birds that you want to see! Who wouldn’t want to see this bird?

We have recently come across several Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles families around Broome. Looks like it’s coming to us in 2012 now!! They generally lay four eggs, but we have only seen a maximum of three surviving chicks after a few days. A good indication that they have eggs or young is the extreme noise that they make.

There were three profound questions my birding group discussed while we birded Trinidad and Tobago, back in December 2012: (1) How many Bananaquits could fit on a banana? (2) And, to make things even more confusing, why did Ian’s 2012 ffrench guide list the motmot under its old name, Blue-crowned Motmot? . I was confused.

From Terry Tempest William’s 1992 bombshell Refuge to Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 blockbuster Wild (now a major-ish motion picture!) In some ways his story is familiar to a lot of birders: the outdoors was both recreation and refuge for him, his family imbued him with a love of learning and an appreciation for the earth.

By the beginning of September the family had decided to move north and over two nights they moved through the area on Cable Beach that is the busiest during the day. Although it would seem a risky move it was to get the family to a reef that is exposed on low tide to the north. Hermit Crab in lid.

Here in the United States, students and their families are no more than two weeks from the beginning of school, notwithstanding those poor kids who have already commenced their academic year. Many potential reasons spring to mind, but one possibility might be the same end-of-summer mania that seems to have infected me and everyone around me.

After 28 days of sharing the duty of sitting on three eggs we finally had the arrival of our first Pied Oystercatcher chicks for 2012 on Friday August 3rd. There was little movement by the family during the heat of the day except to fly to the shoreline for a drink and to cool their feet.

A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. This time they appear more relaxed, but nervousness might be a better politics: in 2007, poachers killed only 13 rhinos in South Africa, but in 2008 already 83, in 2009 – 122, in 2010 – 333, in 2011 – 448 and in 2012 a staggering 668!

For some reason the Fringillidae, as the finch family is called if you want to be highfalutin, frequently tend toward pink. Though both birds are actually mostly brown the pink on the wings and their sheer awesomeness qualify them for inclusion in the pink finch family. Not that I’m complaining!

That night Ty and his family looked through the photos. Ty died peacefully at home yesterday, on October 17, 2012. In an instant, he was gone. There were cheers, applause, and minutes later people were pointing upward, swearing that the tiny speck in the sky must be Ty’s hawk. Cindy wrote, “Our baby is finally free.”

Fortunately for we humans, placing primates properly phylogenetically in relation to the other mammals requires an act or two of faith at the deeper ends of the family tree, but it is probably true that primates and rodents share a common stock to the exclusion of others, so maybe we are all mice. see: Matthew E. However very few birders ever venture to areas off this well-beaten track, so with this in mind, I decided to explore a fascinating but ornithologically little known corner of Ethiopia in January 2012, to see what surprises awaited me. As the sky turned rosy with dawn, we stopped for some excellent additions to our burgeoning bird list.
