These species are not only beautiful or charming, but have a personal resonance for me. Around 2011 or 2012, I discovered an online forum of a rather select group of Mexican birders. I now suspect that this species is often a possibility for Lake Cuitzeo during the month of May. Chestnut-sided Shrike-Vireo : I get game.

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species.

This Tufted Titmouse was found stunned in the glass corridor several years after the feeders were taken down, showing that clear glass and vegetation are not a good combination any time. There’s a lot more, of course, and it all makes you wonder if we should have bird feeders or urban green spaces or fountains or windows.
