B is for Bunting

Releases took place from 2008 to 2016, eventually establishing a viable population of around 50 pairs in the county. I photographed this bird from a public footpath on the Dorset coast, where these rare buntings have recently started breeding again Cirl buntings are late breeders, as they feed their young principally on grasshoppers.

Andalucia’s City-Slicker Falcons

The birds I saw there were most likely Asian breeders, for they don’t start to migrate north until March, by which time the European-breeding birds are already crossing the Mediterranean. However, a drastic decline followed, and census results for 2016 and 2017 produced counts of around 2,500 pairs.
