Mid-June has so much to offer in the temperate zones, with breeders in one half of the world and migrants in the other. Those of you in the tropical zones can enjoy your resident birds in peace for once. And to those of you in the polar zones, just why ?
All photos were taken in Australia in December 2016 – locations included Brisbane and surroundings, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, Melbourne, and the coast near Melbourne. And that seems to be the only vaguely satisfying thing left to do at the moment.
I’m sure regular visitors to this area could tell you more about how the winds and tides affect the migrating birds and when the breeders start to nest. My particular favorite terns were the Sandwich Terns, a bird I rarely see in any numbers and just generally good looking with that natty yellow-tipped bill.
You might come across species you haven’t seen in years even though they are resident breeders, find seeding bamboo with species that won’t be encountered otherwise, or come across an unexpected antswarm that finally has that sneaky ground-cuckoo.
The first three sections are brief, presenting a summary of the bird’s current NYC status (migrant, resident, breeder, vagrant, etc.), and historical status as described in specific ornithological writings by John Bull, Allen Cruickshank, Ludlow Griscom, E. Eaton, and John Kuerzi.
Releases took place from 2008 to 2016, eventually establishing a viable population of around 50 pairs in the county. I photographed this bird from a public footpath on the Dorset coast, where these rare buntings have recently started breeding again Cirl buntings are late breeders, as they feed their young principally on grasshoppers.
The birds I saw there were most likely Asian breeders, for they don’t start to migrate north until March, by which time the European-breeding birds are already crossing the Mediterranean. However, a drastic decline followed, and census results for 2016 and 2017 produced counts of around 2,500 pairs.
