Each week a new species tried to test the patch for nesting territory. Last week, a Merlin flew in, dove at some blackbird and kept going.

It was time to test the umbrella method again. Great clouds of Blackbirds and Cowbirds , with a high percentage of Yellow-headed Blackbirds ? But in flight, and high in the reeds, Yellow-headed Blackbirds come to the fore. Must be Lake Cuitzeo in the winter season. Bronzed Cowbirds were also present.). But so worth it!

It was the only real highlight at Shinnecock for we two jaded birders, though we did appreciate seeing all three scoters, a whole bunch of Common Eiders , both species of scaup, some Great Cormorants , and a bunch of Red-breasted Mergansers. It really has been a great winter to see both species in New York.
