Fruit For Birds

10,000 Birds

When the orioles arrive at my feeder, they definitely have a preference for the grape jelly to the orange–who doesn’t love to chow down on that high fructose corn syrup? They are species that breed in the US and then spend the winter in Central and South America, eating what’s avialable–especially fruit.

Field guides listed two subspecies – delicata (which would eventually become the highly migratory Wilson’s Snipe ) and paraguaiae (breeding resident South American Snipe ) – which were extremely difficult to discern from one another in the field. For me, these birds add a bit of mystique and mystery to the overall experience.

Pirates of the Caribbean

I did however manage to be in the right place at the right time to experience a gang of Magnificent Frigatebirds that had a Red-footed Booby surrounded. Both Brown and Red-footed Boobies actively breed on Little Tobago as well as Saint Giles. If you look carefully, you can just see its meal about to be ejected.
