This book is essentially about those birds that breed on the continent south of the Sahara, a topic few birders are familiar with. The rest of the 216 pages long book is devoted to various African bird families and half a dozen individual species. He has authored several other books and many articles, largely on natural history.

Even more than warbler, shorebird, and sparrow identification, this is a field that tests our endurance (gull watching is too often done in bitter cold, windy conditions), patience (even getting one good photo can take hours as you try to separate the ‘interesting gull’ from the flock), observational skills (so many plumages!)

The authors’ detailed delineation of problems with the accuracy of NYC breeding bird surveys or with the limits of historical writings may test a reader’s patience. Because, as this book demonstrates so well, it is sometimes important to look back in order to move forward.

Most likely, the researchers have indicated, the hatched birds would be viable and not too different from regular chickens, possibly less different than some of the odd breeds generated by more traditional methods. Some of the first solid research pointing to a magnetic sense of some sort in birds was being produced at that time, and there were even people testing humans for a similar ability. Itcher birds, migratory members of the tern family. Some of the research being done then (the 1980s) was pretty naive and sometimes downright silly.
