Save the Painted Bunting, y’all: Keep wonder alive

There are two Painted Bunting populations, one that breeds along the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Florida and one that breeds in the interior United States and northern Mexico from southeastern New Mexico to western Mississippi. The Atlantic Coast population lingers on the breeding grounds after nesting to molt.

Tri-colored Egret or Snowy Heron?

On a recent filming trip to Emeralda Marsh in Lake County Florida we managed to film and photograph a suspected hybrid between a Tricolored Heron and a Snowy Egret. As early as 1954 a suspected Little Blue Heron/Snowy Egret hybrid was reported from Florida. Hybrids between separate species are rare.

My Top Ten Birds of 2016 (or, Let’s Remember the Good Things about 2016)

I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. Finally, deciding that a duck that required 250 acres of land to breed probably did not welcome intruders, we tiptoed out of the swamp.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of March 2011)

liz Mar 7th, 2011 at 6:18 am Fleeing the snow and cold of NY, we visited Florida and I got a lifer – a snail kite. I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice.
