You are certain to see Greater One-horned Rhinoceros , Water Buffalo and Hog Deer , and with a bit of luck Smooth-coated Otters. Travel onto the world famous Kaziranga National Park and you will have very good chances of more endangered species such as Pallas’s Fish Eagle , vultures, Swamp Francolin , and both species of Adjutant Storks.
For long it was assumed that the saplings cannot survive being under water half a year, from spring to August, but recently another theory was tested. Asian water buffaloes were brought to Greece by Ottoman Turks centuries ago and by now, they have developed into a separate race, the Greek buffalo, which is protected as an old domestic breed.
Crocodiles, Cape Buffalo and Hippos are plentiful. That would have tested out rental insurance policy! Lunch has been at the Lower Sabie camp, where there is a pretty incredible view of the Sabie River, and the many sand bars that form in front of the restaurant.
The Big Five–lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros–are impressive, but my heart lies with the patterned mammals, giraffes and zebras. Sadly, we weren’t able to join them or the leopard.
Looking left I saw a big, male buffalo behind the bush. I described what I had done, and she happily started ticking every possible test for every possible tropical disease on her little lab sheet – from bubonic plague to yaws. It’s such a great place for birds. Just a few meters away from me.
Back to Riverhead we went, where we failed to find anything other than the Greater White-fronted Goose Derek had found earlier, though we did spend quite a bit of time at the buffalo farm at the corner of Reeves and Roanoke hoping to pick a good blackbird out of the huge flock there.
