Birds The local birdlist has reached 462 species, and some 30 more are expected. Just think of the still Unnamed Antshrike (either related to Chestnut-backed Antshrike , or, given the morphological differences, a new species: Inirida Antshrike ). I didn’t get it either.

It was time to test the umbrella method again. Although I had earlier seen my first Gadwalls for the season, my real finds for the day were two species which supposedly should not visit the Mexican highlands: one Black-bellied Plover , and several Dunlins. and Canada). Most winter in the U.S.

Those would be species like the Keel-billed, White-throated, and Toco Toucans , the latter of which has become such an iconic rep. for its kind that even in Costa Rica, images of the Brazilian species have been used for marketing (much to the chagrin and dismay of local birders). And they come to feeders too!

Lovely Cotinga is the flagship species at Pico Bonito, where it is perhaps easier to see than anywhere else within its range. More than 400 species have been recorded at the lodge to date.
