Australian Dairy Farmers says calves can be left unfed for 30 hours before slaughter but the RSPCA says the practice is "cruel". Dairy Australia commissioned a blood-test study which showed that calves deteriorated after 24 hours off feed, she said. The study showed a limit of 24 hours without food "would be better", she said.

Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for. Cows, domestic sheep, chickens and many others would not survive if they were not raised for human consumption, protected from malnutrition, disease and predators.
