We had been floating, birding amidst a massive flock of shearwaters, surrounded by an aquatic city of Spinner Dolphins when Wilfredo spotted two small dark shearwaters flying away from the feeding flock. As we approached and drew nearly alongside the small seabirds, we also tested the limits of our optics, our balance, and our focus.
And what about the dead dolphin? Seems odd, although officials with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality said that fish they've tested have not been killed by oil, but a lack of oxygen in the water. But so far, it looks like the oil spill is not to blame. But why did 60 dead endangered turtles wash up over three weeks?
Regarding the Covid, the usual measures were in place, and no one got it, at least no US, Canada, or French participants who did the mandatory testing at the end of the tour, as required by their home countries.
