“We let a one-eyed Bald Eagle go after a year of battling state officials in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. Two years ago we got a call about an eagle hit by a car. When we arrived we looked and there was our one-eyed eagle, eating a raccoon that had been hit. That was 9 years ago.

Betty’s Bay was also a great place to see all of South Africa’s cormorant species, including the endangered Bank Cormorant. We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. It was the first of six bustard species I would see over the course of both trips. And then there were the Flamingos.

That would have tested out rental insurance policy! I have managed to find two owls, the first was this pair of Verreaux’s Eagle-owls. I will try to get everything tallied as far as bird species goes tonight. I should be at about 140 African species both counted and photographed!

1) Dusky Eagle-Owl. There’s a lot of good birding to be done at the Taj Mahal: Rose-Ringed Parakeets and Red-vented Bulbuls on the grounds; Painted Storks and Pied Avocets along the Yumana River, seen from the Taj terrace; Booted Eagles and Black Kites flying overhead. 2) Plum-headed Parakeet. 7) Piping Plover. But, I saw the bird!

I bought a new rucksack yesterday and the first thing I checked when I brought it home was, how easily my spotting scope with a mounted window clamp fits in – test passed with flying colours. Knowing that there are reserves with long lists of 600 or more species, I set my threshold at more than 600 birds… and found only a few such hotspots.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. This one on birding in Skåne claims that “ in winter, golden eagles, buzzards and werewolves are often seen ”. I dipped on both the Golden Eagle and the werewolves, which left me with mixed feelings. Lilac would have been a more appropriate name as this shrub was everywhere – seems to be an invasive species. Watch the signs!
