For the last two decades, Europe and the greater Mediterranean have been covered by one of the best field guides anywhere: “Collins Bird Guide” by Lars Svensson et al., published in the US by Princeton as “Birds of Europe”. Following the IOC taxonomy (Gill and Donsker 2018), Birds of Cyprus deals with 405 species.

In May 1992 European Union governments adopted legislation designed to protect the most seriously threatened habitats and species across Europe. After introductions we took a short walk to test out the PDA based site tour guides that visitors can use to guide them along the myriad of forest trails.

When I came here for the first time, the Kerkini Lake was the only place in Europe where Dalmatian Pelicans were increasing their numbers. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

Colombia is one of those countries that Dragan’s dreams are made of: it has 1,965 bird species – more than any other country in the world.
