Corey enjoyed camping with family and friends for the long weekend after getting tested for COVID and coming up negative. Mongaup Pond in Sullivan County is a great place to beat the heat of summer and an even better place to hear duetting Barred Owls while you are lying in your tent. I knocked down several first birds of spring this weekend (not literally) but will always give Best Bird honors to a Saw-whet Owl , especially one showing as well as the one Ivy and I located at Owl Woods on Easter. Corey was extremely pleased to finally get out and about birding again after his family all caught COVID and recovered.

Which tours saw the most roosting owls? This odd nocturnal creature is around the same size as a Barred Owl. I savor the timeless experience of scanning these tropical waves for storm-petrels and lost jaegers. In Costa Rica, our July birding news usually consists of interesting sightings during the mid-summer tours.

I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. 1) Dusky Eagle-Owl. Seeing this giant, awkward yet majestic bird walk through the densely littered landscape was a surreal experience. (4)

Nonetheless, a birder’s initial experience in Honduras sets him or her on an inexorable course towards the only species currently named for this gem of a country. Not every vehicle can attain the summit when the roads are washed out–ours failed the test–but, luckily, Esdras Lopez Mejia had no problem ferrying us to the top.
