Vaccinated, with no symptoms and negative tests to boot, Corey got to Prospect Park in Brooklyn and was very relieved that the previously reported Progne martin was still present, on its fourth day. Consensus is forming that the bird is a Gray-breasted Martin , a rarity that isn’t expected even in south Texas, much less New York.

I had racked up only twenty-odd species, all of which I’d have to be blindfolded to not see if I spent a year in New York City. So I brought along a new pair of Opticron Natura BGA binoculars. At least I could test them out. Did I have a lovely experience with the birds as well?

The experience is one of the ornithological highlights in the world. The field site I am assigned to is located in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and home to a particularly rich avifauna that numbers well over 500 species. That’s right – birds eating clay. Scarlet Macaws.

On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. Pity me too while you’re at it… I’m as ready for spring as any migrant!

Dear Senator Murray, I have read articles in the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times about the chimpanzees at Holloman Air Force Base. I am deeply troubled and angry that the National Institute of Health wants to move almost 200 chimpanzees from this facility to a laboratory in Texas where they may be subjected to testing.
