Although Bobolinks are a very rare migrant, lots of other birds are possible, more than enough to rack up hundreds of species over the course of the year. I think everyone can readily admit that owls are cool. Yet, these very qualities are what make them so difficult to see as birders, and in my years of birding I had managed to spot just two: the Snowy Owl (which is active during the daytime) and the Barred Owl. One particular family of owls had particularly evaded me.

A single morning birding the thorny desert of Baringo in Kenya’s Rift Valley yielded several species at a rate I at times struggled to keep up with. Lake Baringo and the surrounding desert scrub at just over 3,000 feet elevation is one of the most profitable birding hotspots in the country, boasting approximately 470 species.

Birding that starts with the largest eagle of the continent certainly bears promises… The next stop is the town park in Opovo, north of Belgrade, where local bird expert Ceda Vuckovic reported one, locally rare, Short-eared Owl. Long-eared Owls are irresistibly cute. Not far from it, several Long-eared Owls douse in winter sun.

The commonest owls are Eurasian Scops Owl and Tawny Owl , while rare ones include Ural Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl. About 120 species have been recorded so far. About 180 species have been recorded so far. Almost 230 species have been recorded so far. The rest is grazing pasture and steppe.

One of the rites of passage I underwent as a birder following my move from New York City to upstate New York was my first winter excursion to the rolling, snow-covered grasslands north of Albany to look for Short-eared Owls ( Asio flammeus ). Sometimes you’ll see no owls at all. You usually wind up frozen either way, owls or not.

Those birds that get to experience northern winters apparently lose their easygoing southern nature and become very very angry. So in addition to having to suffer through that awkward teenage period of feeling like it doesn’t fit in with the other kids, the adolescent Red-tailed Hawk doesn’t even fit in with its own species.

Most of the birds I spotted this weekend are the same species I’ll be hanging out with all winter. Most of the breeders seemed to have departed already on their journeys south but he did enjoy a Barred Owl serenade in the wee hours of the morning two days in a row so the Barred Owl wins as his Best Bird of the Weekend.

Go to Hispaniola and a birder has the pleasure of admiring two species of tody for the price of one, checking out the odd, mono familiar Palmchat , and listening to the parrotish calls of the White-necked Crow. During a two-year long moratorium on hunting in T&T, I had some of the most incredible birding experiences. My first experience was with a nesting pair, one bird was out at the time and the other was comfortably sitting quite low in the nest. My second lifer this trip was a migratory Yellow-throated Warbler , a species I could not hope to see my previous trip, which had occurred in early summer.
