They were still listed as Endangered, but wildlife management measures taken in this park were clearly working. And unlike the protection of cormorants, which was perceived as a problem, protection of pelicans was welcomed by the local communities. The moat would protect the islets and allow the birds to start nesting earlier.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. The Lodge at Pico Bonito is an inviting, idyllic place for relaxation as well as for enjoying wildlife. Cuery y Salado Preserve protects a coastal mangrove system full of wildlife from monkeys to trogons. We first visited Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge. In case you are wondering, Cristalino Lodge was his other top choice.
