Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 1)

10,000 Birds

This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. The scientific species name of the Rusty-naped Pitta oatesi honors Eugene William Oates (1845-1911), an English civil servant in India and naturalist.

Birding India with the ABA

10,000 Birds

India was not on my list of places to go in 2016. So, I birded India, land of Indian Peafowl , Saag Paneer (my favorite Indian dish) and Tigers. The species is crepuscular and nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen during the day. I had not planned on birding India in 2016, but I’m very happy I did. It was a big owl.

Beside India, Lynx Illustrated Checklist of the Mammals of South Asia covers Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. I clearly needed a mammal book.

10,000 Birds

A Rose-ringed Parakeet and an India Paradise Flycatcher were next. I always find it quite fascinating to see new species of bird families I am already familiar with (Note to self: This could be a good topic for future posts). And of course a Black Kite , a raptor that is extremely common in India.

Not enough Woodpeckers

10,000 Birds

Or would be, had I encountered more of them – so far, I have seen only a very small share of the approximately 233 woodpecker species, and got decent photos of an even smaller number – not much more than 10% of all of them. So, writing a post about them is easy. Supposedly, they smoke less than the Brown-capped ones, too.
