When I first saw it I thought it might be a snowy or a barn owl because it was almost white. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. It was very a pale gray. I see why people sometimes call them gray ghosts.

Moved by an unseasonable bout of optimism, I went owl-chasing this weekend and actually encountered what has been a true nemesis bird for me: Northern Saw-whet Owl ! For Corey, this was a weekend without a single standout species but with many birds that were pretty darn neat. And isn’t that an inspiring thought?

Although we didn’t start out the birding that way, on the third day, we did find ourselves wondering if we were approaching 300 species.

Phoebe Snetsinger was an American birder who first passed the 8,000 species mark. Before leaving the safety of the car I heeded the park’s advice and checked for animal tracks belonging to any biting, gnawing, mauling, trampling, stabbing or disembowelling species. She died in a car accident during a birding trip.

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.

She packed her bags, waved her family goodbye, and left for Sweden. Lilac would have been a more appropriate name as this shrub was everywhere – seems to be an invasive species. The town is central to many other hotspots and it should be possible to get to more than 100 species in a day or two. Singing birds were everywhere.

Eastern Screech-Owl, 22 March, Alley Pond Park, Queens, New York. Before this year I had only ever encountered a single Eastern Screech-Owl in Queens and that was essentially a heard-only in the wee hours of the morning on a Christmas Bird Count. The lack of owls was a real bummer. What a cutie! Was I extremely lucky to see it?
