I knocked down several first birds of spring this weekend (not literally) but will always give Best Bird honors to a Saw-whet Owl , especially one showing as well as the one Ivy and I located at Owl Woods on Easter. Corey was extremely pleased to finally get out and about birding again after his family all caught COVID and recovered.

Which tours saw the most roosting owls? This odd nocturnal creature is around the same size as a Barred Owl. And many of these species are also strikingly beautiful. Birding there can often be a test of endurance. Yellow-winged Caciques , showy members of the Blackbird/New World Oriole family, are always conspicuous residents of the region. I’ll throw in an adorable Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl by way of an apology.

I’ve been chasing Northern Saw-whet Owls , those adorable little predators, for years now. But here we are in March again, so off I trudged to Owl Woods, Rochester’s surest spot for Saw-Whets. Most owlers look for whitewash, pellets, and other owl sign; I, on the other hand, look for other owlers!

The field site I am assigned to is located in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and home to a particularly rich avifauna that numbers well over 500 species. Hundreds of riotously colored birds representing 14 species of macaws and parrots flock and frolic together in less than fifty meters of forest canopy.

When I first saw it I thought it might be a snowy or a barn owl because it was almost white. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. It was very a pale gray. I see why people sometimes call them gray ghosts.
