A bird ringed near Helsinki, Finland, in October 1970 was found dead, 18 days later, in the Scottish west-coast town of Stranraer, a distance of 1,800km and a minimum speed of 100km per day. At the time I was writing about cars, so I recall we travelled in a road-test Porsche. A young friend, David Tipling, travelled with me from Kent.

Azure-winged Magpies fail to pass the mirror test, a test commonly used to determine self-recognition. While the source does not say so directly, it hints that this means the species is not as intelligent as Eurasian Magpies (which pass the test). Then again, that is probably the length of summer in Finland.
