Barnacle Goose is my choice for the next bird, because we discovered one lone bird among all of the hundreds of Canada Geese , Greylag Geese and Eurasian Wigeon at Freiston Shore and it was as if it was a test to see if we would notice “the odd one out”! Canada Geese , Greylag Geese and Eurasian Wigeon.

Saddle-billed Storks, Yellow-billed Storks, Woolly Storks, Sacred Ibis, Gray Herons, Reed Cormorants, Three-banded Plovers, White-crowned Lapwings, Blacksmith Lapwings, Egyptian Geese, White Faced Ducks and African Palm Swifts have been there every day. These, however, were as wary as lawn geese. Swan mortality is a bit of a black box and the results from testing the carcasses has not come in, or at least I have not heard it. I know this for a fact, because this is precisely what I did last week when I spent a day in the eastern part of North Carolina chasing rarities.

Here’s a tidbit from the NRA’s Hunters’ Rights website: “Sandhill cranes are hunted much like geese, with decoys set in fields and hunters stationed in blinds. Canada Geese and Crows can figure it out, so can Cranes. Hunters will be required to pass and ID test.

A variety of species of geese, ducks and swans swim on the lake while the woods and reeds have every warbler imaginable. It’s full of waders, ducks and geese. I went to Väko Myr to test my luck and although the Black Grouse were a no-show I did see a pair of Bullfinch in the parking lot. Watch the signs!
