Animals for research purposes are coming from municipal shelters, breeders and the greyhound trade. Dr Wirth said animal testing was increasing, with Victoria doing more research than any other state. Unwanted farm dogs are another source. From the Herald Sun. In 2007, 394 dogs died during procedures for canine and human research.

I somehow became the non-vet, go-to person regarding dogs and diabetes, I suppose due to my frequent blogging about Violet Rays (left), my greyhound who has been through diabetes, blindness (then cataract replacement), glaucoma and retina detachment. My experience, because I test frequently, was relatively uneventful.

Though I test Violet's blood sugar several times a day and give her her insulin and glaucoma medication and eye drops and eye gel, she is only mildly impressed with my dedication. The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. She needed to know that I was committed to her life and the way I would demonstrate that was to keep her by my side and regulate her myself, using the same glucometer and test strips people use. There she is. She has beaten the odds and made it another year.

I wrote about atheism, diabetes (which I do think is important and stay tuned for a video about canine diabetes and how to test blood sugar), dog food, feral cats, and of course, greyhound racing. But, probably because I was blogging daily and there wasn't great fodder daily, I expanded into other areas. I was all over the place.

This, now, is a very practical matter, where all measures we take must be tested empirically on their consequences. I do think that in my lifetime greyhound racing will end, circuses will be animal-free, elephants and marine mammals won't be in zoos, and fur might even be banned.
