In the Orinoco, the largest observed groups number 30, but average is just above five. We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. At first one, then two more, then one more, and altogether some 6 or 7 dolphins were coming to the surface.

There was a small group of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos being destructive as usual! A small group of Spinifex Pigeons wandered down for a drink. There were no ducks, herons or ibis and only one Great Egret in the length of the gorge that you can walk. There were several pairs of Black-fronted Dotterels along the edge of the water.

At first, the birds were absent, it was just that one shearwater, a sad lost Eastern Kingbird flying low over the waves, and groups of Brown Boobies making a beeline to feeding grounds. The boat had been chartered by a big group of Mumbai birders to see a Long-billed Dowitcher that would make a most unusual addition to an Indian list. It turns out that the dowitcher was showing so well that the group had had a whipround for the crew to encourage them to stay longer. This was its fourth year. Common Redshank.

My group arrived in a larger and more comfortable SUV and with a knowledgeable bird guide from within the state. The reserve guides are further divided into specific Birdwatching Sites, Access & Accommodation, and Conservation. Hence, it was a bit of an annoyance to be forced to hire a general nature guide who knows mostly mammals.
