Here's a group I've never heard of. I found a link to them on ANIMAL's blog (ANIMAL is a Portuguese animal rights group.) These scientists are NOT an animal rights group. They do support some animal-based studies (which sucks); HOWEVER, they acknowledge that much animal research is useless.
Last weekend I accompanied a small group of intrepid birders to El Cerro del Aripo, the tallest peak on the island at about 940m. But when we stumbled upon a small group of Red-crowned Ant-Tanagers I swiftly changed my tactics and opted for the camera-in-hand approach. Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush. Blue-capped Tanager.
Their is a proposal to ban testing on apes in the EU. Europe's environment chief plans to ban laboratory tests on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and orangutans -- in a clampdown on animal testing by the drugs industry and other laboratories. Is this a solution to a problem that doesn't exist?
In all the usual measurements, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, I still test very well. And, according to my test results, that works for me. And I must say, based on this most unscientific sample group, the future for my own birder’s health could be quite rosy.
First, let’s start with the good: Scientific testing of drones near birding hotspot Cape May, NJ has been postponed to avoid messing with Red Knots and Piping Plovers (like the cutie above that Corey photographed there a few years back). (On Sea World San Diego just welcomed the world’s first “test-tube” penguin.
I strained to see them, could only see an occasional booby escape our bow, watch some of the hundreds of Wedge-tailed and Pink-footed Shearwaters zip by and hold on as our boat tested its speed. As we approached and drew nearly alongside the small seabirds, we also tested the limits of our optics, our balance, and our focus.
The morning I first tested them was filled with migrating flocks of European Bee-eaters and their constant bubbling voices. And all the time I was testing the CLs, I was wondering what the difference was between them and their big brother, the ELs. Still, testing binoculars on a bright sunny day? Photo by Senka Puhalo.
Around 2011 or 2012, I discovered an online forum of a rather select group of Mexican birders. In May of 2018, I included some rather sad photos of what I had identified as a group of 6 Long-billed Dowitchers in my eBird report for Lake Cuitzeo. I could not test this theory in 2024, as by that month the lake had disappeared.
I recently birded the Tualatin River NWR near Portland, Oregon, and made that my test case for a deeper dive into the Mobile Track. The meanderings and backtracks in the wooded area were looking at groups of Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets, etc. The eBird checklist is here.
When my friends over at YourBirdOasis sent me a super squirrel-proof bird feeder to review, I had to think about who I knew who could really put the device to the test. The proof of this is their Squirrel Buster Plus bird feeder , which I had the pleasure of testing over the last several weeks. I chose this as my test.
Now, let me test the armour of “Birds of Cyprus” (BOC) against the mace of the “Collins Bird Guide” (CBG). In Europe, shorebirds, gulls an warblers are the three hardest groups to present, describe and ID, so I tested the BOC armour where I know it will be the weakest. The other groups are easier and, hence, shown well.
The best test of that proposition, of course, is to repeat it to any one of the hundreds of thousands of birders who have, say, a family. Please consider using the services described in this post or any of the other posts we are sharing this February. The gardens of Krakow’s Wawel harbor migrants and resident birds alike.
Activists and environmental groups went into overdrive, and in March 2014 the State of California approved a ban on the sale of the worst types of anti-coagulants. There are no tests to diagnose it, either. Read that again: it has no antidote. Do we all feel better?
Science is fairly well established that yawning can spread like wildfire among groups of humans, as well as a few other mammals. The amount of yawns increased significantly when the test birds could see others—whether real, or on a screen—also yawning. (Our first victim appears to be the Ring-billed Gull above, photographed by Corey.)
A few years ago, in the American Birding Association FB group I posted a question: Where would you go if funds weren’t a problem? In September 2015 a group of eight intrepid bird watchers linked up with the African Wildlife Foundation and arranged for a 10-day stay in Yemi [DRC].
Babita Tours has many years of experience organizing tailor-made wildlife tours for private groups in this wonderful country. From the alpine habitats of the Himalayas, to deserts, grasslands, wetlands and forests, India has a great deal to offer the birdwatcher.
The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders. That’s a lot, and the organizers of the safari did an excellent job of creating an environment that offered small group birding during the day and a birders party every night. Wait, let’s backtrack a bit.
An experiment in which anesthetized pigs were buried alive in snow to learn how humans live or die in avalanches was halted today in Austria after animal-rights groups denounced the research as cruel and useless. Large groups of Little Bustard are not uncommon in winter. They have many different varieties, and I selflessly tasted/tested a dozen different varieties. The Skylarks and Northern Wheatears in the barren fields attract all four European species of harrier (but no Montagu’s for Christmas, sorry).
I lean towards the second group. Ok, I had studied the storm-petrels, but these were far and could not get a long-enough view at them to test how well or badly prepared I was. Some birders like to see just birds, while others like birds, but don’t mind stopping or even taking detours to see other creatures along the trail.
Rather, it was seeing a large group of dedicated and passionate professionals proposing and testing theories and generating mountains of data about birds. Of course, my choices of presentations surely differs from others, but there are literally hundreds to choose from.
This photo, which was shared on a local birders’ WhatsApp group, shows the enormous extension of burning reedbeds on that very windy day. A recent local news article says its current maximum depth is 60 cm/2 feet, although I didn’t test this statement.)
Yet, somehow, that is what I found myself doing on the grounds of Tisza Balneum, the gorgeous hotel on the shore of Lake Tisza in Hungary where Swarovski Optik had decided to unveil to a gathered group of European and American birders the scope for which we had all been waiting, even if we didn’t know we had been.
Lush USA has a program where they sell hand and body lotion that supports a variety of animal and environmental groups. Called the Charity Pot, they donate 100% of the retail price minus taxes to a group you can designate. I found this through Sea Shepherd, which is one of the groups that you can donate to through the program.

Antbirds, flycatchers and ovenbirds (Furnaridds) are the largest groups of Tropical Rainforest birds, but they don’t occur evenly along the altitudinal length of the forest. Most species of antbirds live on the ground and understory, flycatcher in the top and middle levels, and Funariids largely in the middle strata. Birding Birding Rally'
At the time I was writing about cars, so I recall we travelled in a road-test Porsche. This past winter has been an exceptional one for Waxwings in Britain, with flocks and small groups spread throughout the country. A young friend, David Tipling, travelled with me from Kent. I never did discover what was attracting them to the ground.
I’ve written at length in the past about the circumstances of that extinction event, how the rich endemic fauna was utterly vulnerable to introduced mammals and how waves of invaders wiped out different groups of species. I’ve also touched on how New Zealanders have responded to these extinctions, but not in as much depth.
One group is trying to make a better list of which species of birds to pretend to be doing something about vis-a-vis imminent extinction using a unique approach: Identifying the most genetically unique species. But there were a gazillion of them. There is a bit of science news.
Now nearing 50 and duly lost in a mid-life crisis, Dragan Simic took to birding rather late – only half a lifetime ago, after successfully testing his inadequate skills in other life threatening activities, such as rock climbing and vertical caving. Sardinian Warbler by Szabolcs Kokay.
Myers, a professional birding guide in “real life,” summarizes the etymology and history of all common bird names (of bird families and groups, not all 10,000-plus species). Although I did test them thoroughly later, I knew from that first sight, this pair was made for me.
As a test of endurance, as a physical ordeal, it’s both miraculous and monstrous.” Environmental groups are all over the map regarding their positions on wind energy,” Kaufman says, and “the forces pushing hardest for wind-power development don’t speak any language but money.”. Eighty hours of flying.
Halfway up the pier, I spotted another knot of American Wigeon, and sure enough, this group included one individual with the tell-tale red head. It posed nicely for me next to an American drake in equally lovely plumage, and then the whole group began moving out and around towards an area beyond the boundary of the park.
But our adventurous group, led by Oliver Komar and Yobani A. Alex first led our group to nesting Yellow-tailed Orioles , which made spotting these exquisite but elusive birds gratifyingly easy.
