Why do birds living near Chernobyl have smaller brains?

It is a very nice bit of science. The hypothesis being tested is that high ambient levels of radiation will cause greater production of reactive oxygen in birds, which in turn will stress neural tissue growth processes resulting in smaller brains. Corey has mentioned the Chernobyl study before.
