Connecticut Oil Company President Illegally Owns Primate

Pierce Onthank, the president of an oil and gas company, was charged in January with illegal possession of a primate for keeping a siamang, a type of gibbon that is native to rain forests in Malaysia and Indonesia and can weigh up to 30 pounds and stand 3 feet high. Strangely, the author of the study uses this situation as an argument not to ban keeping Hwameis in captivity illegal altogether but rather just to limit the keeping. One of the reasons stated is “the benefits of the people” (not the birds). Hmm, I think I disagree with the author.

Does the fact that this guide doesn’t include all of Indonesia or Malaysia mean that a birder going to these countries will have to invest in multiple field guides?

While it is laudable to publish a paper about the threat to laughingthrushes (including this) by the bird trade, I still feel that lame-joke titles such as “Nothing to laugh about – the ongoing illegal trade in laughingthrushes ( Garrulax species) in the bird markets of Java, Indonesia” should be avoided.

Unfortunately, Hen Harriers die disproportionally near British Grouse moors – most likely killed illegally by people hunting grouse for sports ( source ). Weirdly, this bird is also described as a common pest in Indonesia, responsible for substantial losses of rice.

Not your standard bird: Standardwing on Halmahera

It turns out he was an illegal logger and bird hunter before becoming a ranger – the latter a story somewhat similar to some of the Yunnan bird guides and bird hide owners. A nice dog accompanied us the whole way to the tower and back, occasionally a bit disappointed with our (in its opinion) still slow speed.
