Their is a proposal to ban testing on apes in the EU. Europe's environment chief plans to ban laboratory tests on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and orangutans -- in a clampdown on animal testing by the drugs industry and other laboratories. Is this a solution to a problem that doesn't exist?

This is a continuation of an earlier post about why I question animal testing. Similar legislation permitted the NIH itself to enter into deals with drug companies that would directly transfer NIH discoveries to industry. But universities and scientists are not always there working for pure learning or the improvement of humanity.

In May 1992 European Union governments adopted legislation designed to protect the most seriously threatened habitats and species across Europe. This legislation is called the Habitats Directive and complements the Birds Directive adopted in 1979.

Seven cities and one state have enacted legislation and ordinances mandating bird-friendly construction (not a lot, but it’s a start, and NYC and Toronto are on the top of that list). Europe banned the use of great apes in animal testing Wednesday as part of drastically tightened rules to scale back the number of animals used in scientific research. I wish we could do the same here in the US, but I highly doubt it.especially considering that Congress may go Republican in November. From the AFP.
