A restaurant owner who put lion burgers on the menu in honor of the World Cup has felt a roar of anger from outraged animal rights activists. Cameron Selogie, owner of the Il Vinaio restaurant in Mesa, served burgers made with African lion this week as a nod to the tournament in South Africa. No, I'm not making this up.

I was curious about why it's so terrible to eat lions. Lions aren't food in our culture. But that wasn't it either.

I've been reading a lot about threatened elephants and primate populations in Africa and wondered about lions. Kenya's lion population has dropped from an estimated 2,749 in 2002 to 2,280 in 2004 and probably just 2000 individuals in 2009. Tags: africa Kenya lion endangered species. In addition to killing birds of prey, brodifacoum has also killed coyotes, grey foxes, red foxes, kit foxes, mountain lions, bobcats, black bears, Pacific fishers, and other animals, including domestic dogs and cats. Syngenta warns that “Talon” is “hazardous to dogs, cats, pigs, poultry and other wildlife.”

Washington wildlife officials say eight sea lions have been found dead in the Puget Sound region in recent weeks — all apparently shot. The bodies of seven sea lions with bullet wounds were recently found on the Nisqually River. On Monday, a sea lion was found dead on West Seattle’s Lincoln Park beach.

Let's pick the sea lions! Portland judge said Wednesday the Northwest states can kill hungry sea lions on the Columbia River. Judge Michael Mosman’s ruling means Washington, Oregon and Idaho can shoot or remove up to 85 sea lions next year. The group’s Sharon Young says fisheries managers are using the sea lions as scapegoats.

Here's someone else who agrees with me that sea lions are not the true threat to salmon. It's just easier to kill sea lions that to break down dams. She highlights dams, but that is only one of the four H's (hydro, harvest, habitat and hatcheries) that are obliterating this beautiful creature.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

The Federal government has approved the killing of California Sea Lions in the Columbia River, blaming them for killing and eating endangered salmon. Never mind the main reasons for the problems with the salmon: hatcheries, human harvest, hydropower and the destruction of habitat.

Take these pesky Lions for instance. Some signal passed between the two Lions and they both rose together and began circling each other. They seemed antagonistic and restless but moments later we discovered we clearly had no idea how to read Lion behaviour. Her breathing was audible over the sound of rain on the roof.

The cove itself is a small beach surrounded by sandstone cliffs and a natural platform where the sea lions haul out. In the mornings, and I use that term loosely, we would set out to monitor the Lions. Lions were re-introduced to the park a few years ago and have done so well the park now serves as a source of Lions for translocations. The first Lions to be re-introduced to Rwanda a few days ago were sourced from Tembe. And how!

And the morning before the Mkuze pack of Painted Wolves, or African Wild Dogs, had been very close to one of the park’s few Lions, as far as tracking collars had told. And the two species were not inclined to get on, by which I mean that Lions will kill other large predators including Painted Wolves. Those collars save lives.

In The 100 Birdwatching Sites in India I haven’t noticed a single park guide to be recommended and visiting birders certainly want to know which guides know their birds. The Mountain Lion struck and killed by a car in Connecticut in June has been confirmed as a wild animal. Its journey originated in South Dakota, 1,500 miles to the west! The last confirmed sighting of a cougar in Connecticut was in the late 1800s.
