Initially, I wasn’t that excited about seeing mammals. The Big Five–lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros–are impressive, but my heart lies with the patterned mammals, giraffes and zebras. We also got great views of a very small mammal, Wahlberg’s Epauletted Fruit Bat, at Satara.

It has all Big Five animals and a whole lot of other grumpy mammals. I ended up scoring four lifers: African Dusky Flycatcher , Village Weaver , Whyte Barbet and Zebra Waxbill. So, apart from large vicious mammals and venomous snakes, what else can possibly go wrong while birding? Then I heard a ruckus.
