I remember watching a David Attenborough episode once where he tested the theory that new world vultures could locate carcasses by smell alone. Like the tube-nosed birds, new world vultures detect the smells of rotting meat carried by the winds. And again, there is great variation amongst different species.

Saving the Drowning Cormorant, or the Kerkini Lake, Greece

For long it was assumed that the saplings cannot survive being under water half a year, from spring to August, but recently another theory was tested. I do have experience with this species from Bodrum, Turkey; it is daring, bold and cocky, and is impossible to forget.
