A Great Day’s Birding in Suffolk County, New York

It was the only real highlight at Shinnecock for we two jaded birders, though we did appreciate seeing all three scoters, a whole bunch of Common Eiders , both species of scaup, some Great Cormorants , and a bunch of Red-breasted Mergansers. It really has been a great winter to see both species in New York.

The Upland Sandpiper I found was only the second I had ever seen in Queens and it stuck around for the rest of the day, allowing dozens of birders to see this declining and hard-to-find-in-New-York-City shorebird. Eastern Screech-Owl, 22 March, Alley Pond Park, Queens, New York. A new Queens bird?
