Merlin and Short-Eared Owl are almost a “dead cert” in winter. They have many different varieties, and I selflessly tasted/tested a dozen different varieties. Bluethroats , Cetti’s and Chiffchaff can be found in the brush alongside the canals and the estuary. The only guaranteed sighting would be the Zitting Cisticola.

This little Eastern Screech-Owl arrived sometime thereafter, and, no doubt, has regretted it every day for the last six months. A woman walking her dog discovered the owl and alerted the farmer, who called a local wildlife hotline. At first Lisa Acton, the New York rehabilitator who took the owl in, thought he was dead.

At one of them, an Eastern Screech-Owl would drop all of his head feathers during his molt. At another organization, the education Great Horned Owl dropped its head, neck and body feathers, leaving only the facial disc feathers and wing feathers in place during the molt.

The very best choice, so far, turned out to be a notebook of waterproof paper, acquired in some army shop (another idea I had, but never tested, was using a waterproof marker on a plastic foil duct-taped onto a deck). Still, it is cheaper to replace a soaked book than a soaked phone.
