Screech-owls don’t actually screech. I suppose that sounds better than “tremulous”, “modulating”, or “little hooting” owls even if any of those names would be more accurate. One of the more recently, officially recognized screech-owl species is the Choco Screech-Owl.

I was soooo excited about getting to know the Middle East, as well as some of its exotic species. The Streak-backed Oriole shown at the head of this post is far from an uncommon species in Paso Ancho. This female Rose-throated Becard also gave me my best photo so far of its species. All in all, it was a very satisfying day.

A single morning birding the thorny desert of Baringo in Kenya’s Rift Valley yielded several species at a rate I at times struggled to keep up with. Peregrine Falcon Peregrine Falcon Another highlight was when another birder informed us of a Eurasian Eagle-Owl that roosted in a vine on the cliff. The owl could be observed extremely well, and again I was very happy to get my best sighting of this species, which I’ve seen a few times before but usually at a distance or at dusk.

Birding that starts with the largest eagle of the continent certainly bears promises… The next stop is the town park in Opovo, north of Belgrade, where local bird expert Ceda Vuckovic reported one, locally rare, Short-eared Owl. Why does this little Screech Owl look so horrified? We receive nestling owls who have been fed nothing but hamburger, whose bones are so brittle from lack of calcium that they break when they try to stand. And they would realize that any species whose young tried to nurse with a pointed beak would be a short-lived species.

At the April peak, one could spot as many as ten different hummingbird species at these feeders. . Further up in Portal, the laughter of diminutive Elf Owls takes over, as they fly about catching moths and scorpions. One step away from swifts are hummingbirds, and at least 13 species of these winged jewels flutter about from sunrise to sunset.
