I live in upstate New York where only one of these two species occurs. Perhaps one with a name tag on its breast would help. and the species name will appear. I still prefer to use the field markings as the decider between the species. Wing coloration while sitting will help. But not while flying. Think “white”.

This is worthwhile to pick up some rocky terrain species and the scenery is stunning.

The genus Bucephala includes three familiar ducks with big heads. apparently has the same origin, the booming of the male’s wings recalling somehow the bellowing of a bull. Now if only the Hoatzin had been named for its smell.
