But it's worth noting that someone out there took some action on this gruesome story. And that's what I like about PETA and why I recently became a member for the first time.

Plus, animals are messy, require feeding and constant care, draw protests, and, yes, can be a bit smelly. Many animal supporters get caught up in fighting the food industry, but animal testing is as ugly and fundamental an issue. This is an important issue.

Animal welfare activists protested the transfer. The chimps have been free from testing at the Alamogordo Primate Facility at Holloman Air Force Base since 2001. A federal contract covering the chimps expires next year. The NIH proposed sending them to Texas to be used in research aimed at finding a hepatitis C vaccine.
