A beef cow at a slaughter plant in South Carolina tested positive for an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), according to a May 19 announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Australian Dairy Farmers says calves can be left unfed for 30 hours before slaughter but the RSPCA says the practice is "cruel". Dairy Australia commissioned a blood-test study which showed that calves deteriorated after 24 hours off feed, she said. The study showed a limit of 24 hours without food "would be better", she said.

Of course, as a result, "ethical meat" becomes an option unless one realizes that killing when you don't need to is killing when you don't need to, no matter if it occurs in a slaughterhouse or in a mobile slaughter operation or in a backyard. You are choosing domination and enslavement and forced breeding and unnecessary slaughter.

In 2008, over nine billion chickens were slaughtered for Americans to eat. This post will get a bit into that for which I apologize, but it seems someone needs to do this. You see, the chickens are being shortchanged. Americans love chicken. Chicken soup and chicken wings are about as American as apple pie.
